14 May 2020 The CEO of Customs & Revenue Mr Kelemete Vahe confirmed to Radio 88.1FM that the government’s assistance for duty-free of essential goods for family use is still valid until the 30th June 2020.
Mr Vahe said that the essential goods are including all types of foods for family use, cleaning and hygiene products such as washing powder, shampoo, cleaning products, diapers, handwashes and so forth. The clothes are not classified with duty-free goods.
The CEO of Custom was concerned with the amounts of people who are mystified with misinformation that distributed around social media especially from people who are unhappy with their paperwork charges.
For instance, a woman from Pelehake who resided overseas claimed on Facebook that her 8″ X 4″ box and two drums that were sent for her family in Tonga were charged TOP$287 for custom duty.
She accused the government of being lying and misleading the people about the duty-free assistance for essential goods.
Mr Vahe told Tapinga Lavemaau from FM88.1 that people are still confused with the essential goods category or definition. The estimated duty for the box and the two drums was around TOP$862.22
The Customs Officer will deduct the values of all the foods, hygiene products and the cleaning products. Thus, the duty of the box and two drums total up to TOP$287.60 which is the right amounts for the customer to pay.
Mr Kelemete concluded with a word of advice to those who are still complaining about the duty of their goods.
- This is the number for you to contact me directly with your concerns – Tel: 08 80 123
- Make sure that you always come to us if you are not happy with your duty.
- Do not take your problems to social media as they will not help you.
People will need to acknowledge the leadership of our Prime Minister Hon Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa, Minister of Finance and Customs Hon Tevita Lavemaau and the CEO Mr Kelemete Vahe in committed to this cause and let the people have their essential goods free of duty. People appreciate this financial assistance and hope that the deadline should be extended.
