Hon Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa

13 August 2020 ‘The Prime Minister Roading Project’ is one of the most controversial topics in Parliament when debated the Deficit Budget 2020/21 back in June.

The PTOA MPs accused the Government of the likely designed procurement process that could allow a lucrative contract for three Private quarries for the roading project.

The Prime Minister and Government were criticized for prioritizing the 300 million-plus ‘Roading Project’ as the most important work of the Government rather than focusing on the pandemic COVID-19.

Hence, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet Ministers stuck to their main roading project and avoided the opposition’s criticism as politicising the development project of the Government.

Hon Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa spoke with Katalina Tohi about the ‘PM Roading Project’ by saying that this is the best time for Tonga to build our nations, particularly when the World trying to combat the COVID-19.

PM stated that during the pandemic COVID-19, most developed countries around the World move on with their development projects such as roading, the building of bridges, airports, and the wharfs’ project, and Tonga is no different from that.

Hon Tu’i’onetoa said, that Tonga will move forward with their development projects such as enlargement of the Kuini Salote Wharf, the work for the Lupepau’u Airport in Vava’u, the wharfs at Ohonua ‘Eua, Niuafo’ou, Niuatoputapu, Vava’u and Ha’apai.

The building of the cyclone’s project for Gita, Tino, and Harold so as the rebuilding of Hospitals and schools. All the development projects of the Government will not be stopped because of the COVID-19.

What happens when we overcome COVID-19? Hon Tu’i’onetoa said that we will continue on with life. We should not let the COVID-19 became a political excuse to avoid the development of our nation.

The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of the ‘roading project’ so as the other mentioned projects of the Government.

He said that the procurement unit of the Government is still processing the procurement of the Private quarries for the project and it will be announced once they completed the requirement of the law.

The rule of law is so vital to this Government and that is what we do in actions, said Hon Tu’i’onetoa.
