21 July 2020 Hon Prime Minister of Tonga Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa denied the claim from social media that there is a problem in public servants’ salaries.

Some critics in social media claimed that Tonga public servants did not have their salaries for two weeks especially the beginning of the new financial year 2020/21.

However, according to the Prime Minister’s Office interviewed between the Hon Prime Minister and Katalina Tohi, Hon Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa said and I hereby quote;

“All the claimed that the Cabinet ceased the salaries of the public servants have no truth in it and it is misinformation.”

“The salaries of the public servants are getting fortnightly particularly on the 14th and 28th of every month, so as it happened in the month of July, the begging of this financial year.”

“That is the exact time of getting the salaries according to the budget that was approved for this financial year.”

“The claimed in social media is inaccurate information as the salaries are gone straight into the public servant’s bank accounts, both the full-time workers and the public servants that are still stranded overseas.”

“Everyone are getting their salaries…”

Government Salary:

All full-time public servants are getting their salaries fortnightly but the government system only allowed to have 24 payments (14th and 28th of every month) instead of the actual 26-fortnight payment annually.

For instance, if your salary supposes to be $40,000 per annum, then your fortnight income should be divided by 24 instead of 26, and that is $1,666.66 fortnightly instead of $1,538.46 if you pay 26 fortnights per annum.
