Hon Dr Pohiva Tui’onetoa

13 August 2020 The involvement of Public servants in politics became a problem for any Government in Tonga due to the persistent growth of public interested in Politics here in Tonga and also the diasporic communities overseas.

The platform of social media nowadays aid and support the increasing popularity of the political movements overseas and particularly in Tonga.

The Public servants sometimes forgot that their responsibilities is to serve the Government of the day and the people of Tonga.

This is one of the Prime Minister’s concern when he stated public servants’ politics is one of the reason why this Government accepted the change of the Town Officers, District Officers and the Community Police to work under the Prime Minister’s Office.

Hon Tu’i’onetoa said that some of the Town Officers and leaders of the Community Police lately showed they excessive involvement with political matters rather than doing their jobs in helping people of the village.

Hon Prime Minister reaffirmed that all constituency’s funds from the Parliament to aid the constituency or aid the community police should control and look after by the People’s representative for Parliament.

It is not the Town Officer nor District Officer nor the leader of the Community Police. It is the Member for Parliament who is responsible for the fund according to the memorandum of understanding, should anything wrong with it.

The clauses 8 and 9 of the Police Act prohibited Community Police Officers from having wages because they are voluntarily workers.

But at the same time, the Community Police funds from the Parliament is an appreciation of their hard work to keep the community safe and secure.

That does not mean that the Member of Parliament can do whatever she/he wants to do with the funds.

Thus, this is the way forward for everyone to work closely in hand in helping the people in the villages and also to achieved the Government’s visions.
