Foodstore retailers in Vava’u are selling contaminated and expired foods
The people of Vava’u are threatening with the contaminated frozen foods and the expired goods that continuous selling throughout the retail stores around the district.
It claimed that the contamination of frozen foods particularly the boxes of chickens, lamb flaps, sausages and boxes of beef meats happened when sending from the main island of Tongatapu to Vavau through dry containers.
Some retail businesses in Vava’u claimed that the available Sea Vessel between Tongatapu and Vava’u does not have frozen containers to accommodate their frozen foods.
It gave them no other option but to send their frozen foods inside dry containers regardless of the claimed that it causes contamination of frozen foods.
Does the government has done enough to solve this problem?
Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) CEO Dr Tevita Manu told Television Tonga News that Vava’u distinct has been facing this problem for over 2 years without any signs of improvement.
Mr Manu said that selling of contaminated foods is illegal and immoral.
The Ministry Staffs in Vava’u have been addressed the issue and work hard on destroying all frozen and expired foods to discourage retailers and save people’s lives from a possible infectious disease that could expose by poisoning and contaminating foods.
The Ministry had already arranged with the ‘MV Taka ‘i Pomana’ Shipping to accommodate frozen containers and make them available for business owners to send their frozen food to Vava’u.
A government contribution to the costs of sending frozen foods inside frozen containers is not yet to finalise. Mr Manu reassured that another option to solve this problem is to take these business owners to Court or cancel their business licence.
We will follow-up this issue, more to come.
